Two generations with one common determination for quality. 　　Gamlitz, March 2011 　　The Walter & Joachim Skoff Wine Estate lies on the idyllic “südsteirischen“ wine route, and is regarded as one of Austria's best wineries. The family estate is already in its fifth generation, and from 2011 is called “SKOFF ORIGINAL“. 　　The range of wines nurtured are typically Styrian, with Welschriesling (Italian Riesling), Gelber Muskateller, Weißburgunder, Grauburgunder and Morillon (Pinot Blanc, Pinot Gris and Chardonnay respectively), as well as the native red varietal Zweigelt, and demand for wines made by the father and son team stretches internationally, and way beyond the boundaries of Austria. Yet Walter Skoff's passion is for Sauvignon Blanc, and it is therefore no surprise that acclaimed wine experts refer to Walter as ”Mr Sauvignon Blanc“ from Austria. The highly aromatic varietal is produced in seven styles, including Sparkling brut and noble sweet dessert wines. His flagship wine, the premium “Royal Sauvignon Blanc“ is served in majestic glasses in Norway; but not just Harald V. of Norway knows what's good. The critically acclaimed Royal Sauvignon Blanc has been awarded 94 points in Peter Moser's “The Ultimate Austrian Wine Guide 2010/11“, as well as being the best-rated Sauvignon Blanc in the 7/2010 edition of Vinaria wine magazine, with an outstanding 18 points. 　　The key to their ongoing success in Gamlitz over the many years is down to the fact that the wealth of winemaking experience is being passed down from generation to generation, and constantly being developed. This includes the specific knowledge about particular vineyards, about the nature of the soil, the climate, as well as the single grape varieties. Each and every Skoff vineyard site displays diversity in its soil composition, aspect and slope incline, that pave the path for complexity and individually throughout their wines. There are also subtle air-flow factors within these vineyards, that additionally bring complexity into the glass of wine. The highly aromatic characters are the result of the diurnal effect of warm days and cool nights during the long summer months. 　　The Classique line of wines are fermented in stainless steel tanks to preserve the natural varietal characters of the wines. The hand-picked grapes come from a selection of single vineyard sites that surround the winery. The premium range of single vineyard wines reflect the terroir and origin of the individual sites. Therefore “Grassnitzberg“, “Hochsulz“ and „Obegg“ are fermented and matured in stainless steel, large neutral oak cask and small oak barrels respectively. 　　The spacious “Buschenschank“ terrace offers breathtaking views over the surrounding countryside, and there is not better place to taste Walter and Joachim Skoff's original collection.
